Project Connect

Five Lambeth secondary schools have worked with the Foundation to extend access to school students in the three years leading up to their GCSE exams; years 9, 10 and 11.

Each participating family benefits from the use of a laptop computer to use at home or at school and, in some cases, internet access is provided through the 3G mobile telphone network.

The project is funded by a mix of contributions from families and grants. The students are asked to sign pledges promising to use the computers to help them achieve a better grades in GCSE English. They are also asked to join a club, society or volunteer programme to promote the concept of "connecting" directly with others not just online.

An individual school page is being completed for each school where information on progress can be posted.

Grants Available

Currently the national e-Learning Foundation has money available for Individual Support Grants. These are cash grants paid to the school to subsidise the cost of providing a device (e.g. a Netbook mobile) and if required a 3G Internet dongle to families not on FSM but not well off (net household income less than £27k). The school is required to confirm that this is the case to the best of their knowledge, although proof is not required.

The level of funding will not be greater than 35% average of the cost of the package. The family is required to pay the balance. The only secure way for this is to require families to pay their contribution in advance once the grant is approved.

The application form can be downloaded here and should be emailed to chris@lelf.org.uk when completed
